Ischemic injury to the central nervous system (CNS) causes cellular activation and disintegration, causing the release of specific proteins known as biomarkers into the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). A study into the concentrations of several known biomarkers including: myelin basic protein (MBP), glial fibrillary astrocytic protein (GFAP), the calcium-binding protein S100B, and neuron-specific enolase (NSE) was conducted in ischemic stroke patients. The concentrations of these proteins in the CSF...

Paolo Zamboni, an Italian professor of medicine conducted a small investigation using ultrasound imagining of vessels surrounding the brain in patients with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). The results showed that 90% of these individuals had a malformed or blocked venous supply from the brain. He hypothesises that iron damages the blood vessels allowing immune cells to cross the blood-brain barrier into the CSF and destroy the myelin sheath surrounding nerves. Dr. Zamboni claims the underlying cause...

A research team at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, conducted a major international study into the relationship between CSF proteins and disorders of the central nervous system. The results suggest that a combination of proteins in the cerebrospinal fluid can reliably identify which individuals with early symptoms of dementia will subsequently develop Alzheimer’s disease. These proteins which have been identified by smaller studies to reflect changes in the brain are known as ‘Biomarkers’...
