Blood-Brain barrier

A layer of endothelial cells which separate the circulating blood and cerebrospinal fluid within the central nervous system. The barrier restricts the movement of microscopic objects such as bacteria and large or hydrophilic molecules into the CSF, but selectively permitting the diffusion of small hydrophobic molecules such as oxygen. The endothelial cells may also actively transport metabolic products such as glucose across the barrier.
