CSF Provides Alzheimer’s Breakthrough

A research team at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, conducted a major international study into the relationship between CSF proteins and disorders of the central nervous system. The results suggest that a combination of proteins in the cerebrospinal fluid can reliably identify which individuals with early symptoms of dementia will subsequently develop Alzheimer’s disease. These proteins which have been identified by smaller studies to reflect changes in the brain are known as ‘Biomarkers’ and include: beta-amyloid, tau and phosphorylated tau.
